Readings for Unit II

Problem Based Learning

A successful problem statement is the necessary trigger for problem based learning as it stimulates the students’ interest. The problem can be presented in a variety of different forms. If the problem is too complex then it also reduces the motivational level of students. The characteristics of problem based learning that are considered particularly important are: building on current knowledge and experience; stimulating the students to elaborate; the level of complexity; the possible for alternate solutions; multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary problems; promotes reflection and development of metacognitive skills. Milestones which specify what the students need to do at a particular stage help in keeping students on track. Each learning outcome will be assessed in a particular format. It is important to identify the resources which students need. The process skills being used by the student are also very important to consider at every stage.
