Concept Map - Understanding

One of the main focus of different readings that we have read so far for this course is on developing understanding in students pertaining to particular subject areas. My concept map is about "Understanding" as being an educator I am particularly interested in developing understanding in students about the different concepts covered. "Understanding" being the main topic is listed in the center of the web. On the top right and left are the different activities/approaches which develop understanding in students. The different areas of "Teaching for Understanding" which lead to understanding are listed on the top right side and on the top left side are the different characteristics of problem based learning which lead to developing understanding in students. Now the arrows going down from "Understanding" in the right and left direction list the different skills which are developed in students once they have developed understanding. Going up and down in the middle are arrows which list the integrated skills that are developed in students once they develop understanding. These integrated skills sum up the whole concept map. These integrated skills then lead to individual projects, which leads to transfer, generalizations, new projects and again transfer to new situations. All the skills are linked together as shown in the arrows going in different directions. Other than understanding one other important concept which is covered in this course is technology or computers. I am still struggling with the idea of importance of computers or technology as in my opinion even a book, a paper and pencil are examples of technology so why just limit ourselves with computers or software programs? What do you think?? Yasira
